A good grinder gives you fresh, consistent particles whenever you want them. A cheap one gives you dust mixed with boulders, and no brewing method fully recovers from that.
The first fork in the road is burr versus blade, and it's the one that matters most. A blade grinder is basically a little propeller that chops the beans by spinning fast. It's cheap and common, but it can't control particle size — it just smashes whatever happens to be in the way. Conical burrs have a cone-shaped center burr sitting inside a ring; flat burrs are two parallel rings facing each other. People argue about the flavor differences endlessly, but for most home brewers the distinction is smaller than the marketing suggests.
Conical burrs are common in manual and mid-range electric grinders. They're efficient, run cooler, and tend to cost less. Flat burrs show up more in higher-end machines and are often praised for a very even, clean grind. Both can make excellent coffee. Unless you're chasing competition-level espresso, choose based on the whole package — build quality, price, ease of adjustment — rather than burr shape alone.

A manual grinder is a hand-crank tool. It's quiet, compact, needs no power, and often costs a fraction of an electric model with similar burr quality. Static can make grounds cling and scatter, turning your counter into a mess. And some grinders are simply loud enough to wake the house.
None of these are dealbreakers on their own, and no grinder is perfect. But if you read a few honest reviews before buying, you'll spot the models that grind cleanly and the ones that fight you every morning. Small daily irritations add up, and they're the difference between a tool you love and one you tolerate.
You don't need to spend a fortune, but a grinder is the one place where spending a little more genuinely pays off. At the low end, a decent manual burr grinder costs about what a couple of café drinks would, and it will transform supermarket beans into something worth drinking. Step up and you're paying for speed, consistency, and easier adjustment.
Set a number you're comfortable with, then buy the best burr grinder that fits it. If money is tight, put more of the budget here and less into other gear — you can brew wonderful coffee with a modest kettle and a cheap dripper, but not with badly ground beans.
